Our read
Legal research went online in 1973 with LEXIS, and Westlaw followed. Thomson Reuters Westlaw, LexisNexis and Bloomberg Law are still the incumbents, with Bloomberg arriving in 2009. The modern wave looks different. Harvey, Casetext, Spellbook and EvenUp were all venture-backed by 2022, and 'legal AI' became the working label in 2023. Generative AI is replacing Boolean keyword search with natural-language questions and automating document review and drafting, and incumbents are responding by partnering with or acquiring AI-native vendors. The criticism of Westlaw and LexisNexis is that they're expensive, opaquely priced and slow to deliver AI lawyers can trust, since early features were called out for hallucinated citations. But they are quickly making changes in pricing and features. We've audited four companies here.
Open question for foundersClaude already promotes specific skills and integrations for lawyers. Harvey and the incumbents have acquired the large firms, but will small shops need to buy expensive legal-focused products?
