Autonomous vehicles have had a mainstream name since 2010, and the category is still sorting out who can afford to finish. Google's project started in 2009 and Cruise arrived about four years later. The list of exits since is long: Argo AI shut down, Uber sold its unit to Aurora, and GM wound down Cruise's robotaxi business. The name is fragmented across self-driving, driverless, robotaxi and automated driving systems (ADS). The technical story has shifted too, with end-to-end neural driving stacks from newer companies like Wayve and Waabi replacing rule-based modular pipelines. The criticism that sticks is that robotaxis are extraordinarily capital-intensive and slow to scale safely, and that safety incidents have outpaced revenue. We've audited six companies here.
